Grief Counselling

Most people experience loss at some point of time in their lives. Grief is a response to any form of loss. Grief is not restricted to feelings of sadness. It can also involve guilt, anger and regret. People in grief can be indifferent between thoughts as they make sense of their loss.

Grieving behaviours also have a wide range. Some people find comfort in sharing their feelings among people but some prefer to be alone. People engage in silent activities like exercising or writing but hesitate to confront their feelings with others.

# There are two types of grieving

  • Instrumental grieving has a focus essentially on problem-solving tasks. This style involves controlling or minimizing emotional expression.
  • Intuitive grieving is based on an emotional experience. This style involves sharing bad feelings, explaining the unsuccessful relationships etc.

Grief CounseLling aims to help people cope with the physical, emotional, social, spiritual responses to loss. Also it helps individuals with many forms of change and loss.

Grief counselling is intended to help the client grieve in a healthy manner. Hence, It understands and cope with the emotions they experience, and to ultimately find a way to move on.

# Techniques In Grief CounselLing:

 * Talking About The Loss

When speaking with the therapist, an individual is allowed to talk in detail about the problems, he is suffering from. Consequently, they release worries, frustrations and sadness which proved to be helpful for suffered person. Talking about the death or loss in a safe place with the freedom to cry can be extremely healing.

* Being Direct

Counsellor are encouraged to use the name of the person who died and use words like death and dead. Subsequently, it is helpful to both the therapist and the client to be direct instead of using indirect words or statements.

* Discriminating between Loss and Life

It is very important for a counsellor to differentiate between loss and life. If a person faced a huge loss in the past, it doesn’t mean that life has ended. Therefore, this technique can be impactful for bereaved individuals. Celebrating the  good moments in life instead of remembering the loss is helpful in the grieving process.

* Coping with Guilt

A counsellor works on individual’s feelings of guilt and sadness. Also they evaluate whether the guilt is rational or irrational. For rational guilt, counsellor work with clients on forgiving themselves and allowing themselves to move forward. For irrational guilts, counsellors try to make clients realise that no mistake is committed by them. Hence , there is no need to develop sadness for the loss for which they are not responsible.

* Writing

Writing help survivors to express their feelings and thoughts more freely. Such free expression is a gesture in grief recovery. Also,having the client to write a letter to the deceased give an opportunity to express things that were left unsaid. The counsellor motivates the client to write honest letters to promote free expressions of unpleasant feelings.

* Role Playing

Role playing is effective in helping the client to adjust in a new and positive environment. Counsellor helps them in building the skills and identify their ability to make new adjustments and move on with life. The counsellor can be involved in role playing to model new behaviours for the client.

So, Grief Counselling aims to help individuals work through the feelings, thoughts and memories associated with the loss. It helps clients in recovering from the guilt and sadness and develops positive vibes. Also, they motivate clients to freely express their feelings and move on with life. Hence, grief counselling is really helpful.
